Historic Site Assessment (2016)
Tabaret Hall : Heritage Building Analysis

The purpose of this project was to familiarize with surveying methods of heritage infrastructure, in this case Tabaret Hall.

Tabaret Hall has been a landmark for the University of Ottawa, and the group conducted some investigations to assess the current condition of the structure. We toured the basement and main floor, acquiring necessary information about the history of the building.

The building was a landmark and displayed the use of a neoclassical architecture style in the heart of Ottawa. The data and observations collected were used to determine the severity of deterioration, historical values and heritage significance.

For this project, the East Wing of Tabaret Hall was the primary focus, due to the fact that the central portion had been previously surveyed. Inspection by our group was done on the basement of the East Wing as well as the exterior façade.

This project was interactive and involved field work to be completed on-site. The location of the site was shown by making a map in ArcMap. A portion of the floorplan of the East Wing basement was made using a Leica TotalStation and a tablet with AutoCAD linked to the instrument.

For the rectified photography component of the site analysis, a ceiling projection of underneath the canopy of the East Wing was taken to use for photogrammetry. Control points on the projection were taken with the TotalStation then imported into AutoCAD to make a shape, which was then used with the image in PhoToPlan to create a distortion-free picture of the projection.

The final recording strategy used was laser scanning. Using a FARO Laser Scanner, a point cloud of the building was made by placing the instrument at four different locations outside of the East Wing. Using the image produced by the point cloud, an elevation of the East Wing was traced in AutoCAD as well as a cross section of the exterior.
